Name: Melaka Fray
Door: Left (Spring forward)

Canon: Fray (comic)
Canon Point: End of "Tales"

Age: 19
Appearance: HERE
History: HERE
Personality:
Brave: Melaka is pretty good at working through fear! There are a few times in canon when she freezes—namely when she's confronted by her brother's killer—but whenever she's pushed to recognize her fear, she learns how to deal with it and comes back stronger. Early on in canon, she's briefly paralyzed with fear when attacked by a vampire, but quickly snaps out of it, fights back, then goes out to learn how to kill them. Confronted by her brother's killer, she is frozen, but it pushes her to train harder, until she can stand in front of him and realize she's no longer afraid.

Throughout canon, she notes her body's reactions to fear, and progresses from "Why can't I move?" to "My hand barely shakes," to "My hand. It doesn't shake at all." There are countless examples of her courage in less connected moments as well. A guy sets himself on fire in front of her—she quickly grabs him with a tarp and dives into the river with him. A monster eats her—she smashes through the roof of its mouth to its brain. A child she cares for dies—she carries her body to her parents and lets the grieving mother take her pain out on her face. Regardless of how scared she is, if someone else is in trouble—when her brother or sister or neighbors are being attacked—she jumps in. Even when she's terrified or just deeply doesn't want to deal with something, Melaka keeps moving bravely forward.

Violent: She's a Slayer, after all. Melaka likes to get into fights. In the opening scene, she shoots someone in the face with a ray gun. "Always ready for a fight," she tells her boss afterwards. It's implied that she gets into bar fights almost nightly, for fun. She gets hit so hard in the face that she goes crashing through the door and is flung across the street, and her first thought is that she has to get back in there so she doesn't miss the fun. Her favourite neighborhood child is convinced that Melaka can solve any problem by "stomping." She just loves violence!

Vengeful: A lot of the time, Melaka's primary motivation is vengeance. Even when scared witless, she desperately wants to kill her brother's killer. She dreams about it. "I've killed you a hundred ways—in a rage, cool as ice, giggling like a schoolgirl," she thinks, even when she's frozen at his feet. Loo, the neighborhood child she cares for, is killed, ostensibly by vampires, and this instantly turns Melaka's stance on vampires to, "Let's make some war."

When she later finds out that Urkonn, her friend, who has been training and protecting her since he first came to tell her that she's a Slayer, actually killed Loo in a desperate act to motivate Melaka to fight, she ruthlessly lures him into a trap and drowns him, then stabs him through the back of the skull, thinking, "He was a good teacher. Even a friend. For a friend, I make it quick." Melaka is desperate to protect the people she loves, and so often, she can't. Whenever that happens, she deals out vengeance.

Defensive: If Melaka had it her way, she'd never admit to anything. Granted, a lot of the time this is because she's done something illegal and doesn't want to go to jail. For example, her cop sister tells her about a theft (that Melaka committed) and she categorically denies knowing anything about it. She often plays dumb as a tactic in conversations like this—"I didn't steal the Senator's omelet," she declares, pretending not to know the word amulet. But this "I don't know anything!" attitude extends to most situations that she doesn't want to have to acknowledge. Her first instinct when told "you met your Watcher," is to say, "I didn't!" before she even thinks it over and realizes she does recognize his description. It takes four years and her brother Harth kidnapping her in his new vampire identity before she says she's sorry to her sister for losing him. She's always ready with a retort anytime anyone disagrees with her or calls her out on anything. (See exchanges such as, "You're late." "You're fat.") If she runs out of retorts, she just starts hitting people. It's really a problem.

Powers and Abilities:
Rapid Healing: She breaks her spine and heals so fast that the doctors assume their futuristic body scans have glitched, so. Pretty dang fast.
Slayer Strength: She can easily lift people three times her size over her head.
Parkour: Her city is basically vertical! She's great at pinging off buildings and even flying cars in motion to get around.
Street Combat: Street fights, bar fights... she's great in a brawl.
Breaking & Entering: She's been a thief for at least the last four years, and has impressive skills at breaking into highly secure buildings without triggering alarms.

☆ An example of how she thinks:
Two doors. Read them, but they say nothing useful. I go left. Nothing worth waiting for in this room. How'd I get here? Can't remember. Keep moving. Med techs on the other side, waiting. Shove through them. Then guards. Not so strong, no pumps among 'em, but they have some kind of weird gun that makes me weak. Is this what it's like to not be a Slayer? I keep kicking but it does nothing.

Come on, Melaka, move. Not the first time you've scrapped a crowd, not the first time you've been the weaker one, so move. But now they're everywhere with needles and cuffs and, Jesu, who even are these crooks? Who sent them? Where am I? This is what I get for daring the whole world.
